I found that in general hyperthreading did not make things any faster. My tests usually ran faster with hyperthreading disabled (of course it depends on what is being rendered). Some of my mental-ray renders would crash with hyperthreading enabled. So, I now leave hyperthreading disabled.
The '-n int' argument is maya software render only, where 'int' is the number of processors to use (defaults to all). Mentalray-for-maya uses a different argument, '-rt int' where 'int' is the number of rendering threads.
I have noticed that mray is more likely to use 100% processor most of the time. Maya only seems to use 100% for some of the render.
