Alors voila, j'ai Ubuntu 7. J'ai fait la mise à niveau à la version 8 via loutil de mise à jour.  
Ca a bloqué à 84% (de mémoire ). J'ai donc redemarré ...
Et la paf ! Ecran vierge ; je vois mon fond décran, mais aucun icone ! ts les menus ont disparu.  
Mais ce qui est amusant, c que je peux lancer c'est par exemple la capture d'écran (et il enregistre bien lefichier !), ou meme ctrl+alt+backspace pour revenir à l'écran de choix des sessions, mais ca ne donne rien...
 
Que puis-je faire pour retrouver mon environnement ?

Non j'ai au moins 60go de libre (sur 80go).
 
 
Nouveauté : j'ai fait ctrl+alt+backspace et ai selectionné "session de secours gnome". J'ai pu me connecter, mais ce nest qu'une session de secours, donc pas gd chose de mrche.
Il me met par contre "impossible de lancer HAL" (failed to initialize HAL).
Donc je suis allé dans le terminal et ai lancé dkpg -reconfigure hal mais il m'a mis "impossible de reconfigurer, hal est absent ou partiellement installé".
Jai regardé un peu sur des forums et ai lancé le gestionnaire de paquess synaptic. il me met un msg en anglais et me demande dexecuter dpkg --configure -a ; donc jexecute dpkg --configure -a . Mais la il reste bloqué à "generating location ... en_AU_UTF-8....." .
 
Qqn à une autre solution ?

Tu peux nous donner le résultat de "df -h", de "top", de "free -m", de fdisk -l ?
J'ai l'impression qu'un soft te bouffe toute la mémoire.

tt est à 0 ou 1%, sauf la 1ere partition qui est à 46% (donc 54% despace libre)
 
sur top :
ts les process sont à 0%cpu et 0%mem, ca monte parfois à 5%...
 
free -m :
mem : free = 11 (total = 238)
buffer ..  
swap => partout 0
 
fdisk -l :
il ne me retourne rien du tout
 
 
Bon sinon je vais graver un cd ubuntu 8 pour voir si je pe pas mettre à jour via le cd truc comme ca ...

Essaye ça pour voir le statut du swap sur tes partitions :
$ swapon -f
 
puis , ça pour désactiver le swap
swapoff -a  
 
Et enfin, pour réactiver le swap :
swapon -a

pour swapon -f il me repond "swapon -f option invalide"
pour swapon -a il me met "cannot canonicalize dev/disk.... aucun fichier de ce type" et "ne peut évaluer pas stat() /dev/disk....aucun fichier de ce type".

Tu vois une partition swap dans cat /etc/fstab ?

Ah aussi, j'ai gravé un cd avec ubuntu 8 dessus, mais il ne me le detecte pas (je pense quil faut faire une manip pour "activer" le lecteur cd car je suis en "mode sans echec" là...).

Regarde dans /dev/disk/by-uuid/ si tu as bien le même UUID que dans /etc/fstab

Alors ce que j'ai fait :
dans le menu de boot, jai selectionné le dernier (juste avant memtest), noyau 2.6.17.10. en recovery mode ; j'ai choisi "dkpg repair blabla packet"
Ensuite j'ai attendu... Il m'a mis une erreur à la fin (comme quoi je dois exectuer dpkg --configure -a)
J'ai demarré sur cette version avec ce noyau ; jai lancé la session de secours gnome et ai executé dpkg --configure -a  
10min après...
Je relance le gestion de packet synaptic et paf ca marche ! Jai meme vu les packets "HAL" (hal-config etc.) que je ne sais pas si je dois réinstaller.
Je vais redemarrer le pc pour voir ce que ca donne.

Tres bien !  
Le pc demarre bien sur cette version du kernel.
Il fonctionne meme tres bien avec les autres !
