Ca yé je vient d'installer la Sarge.
Ma carte graphique a bien été detecté (ati 8500).
J'ai configuré manuellement les spécificités de l'ecran (resolutions verticale et horizontale), lors de l'installation.
Mais au premier démarrage, la surprise. Je n'ai le choix de resolution qu'entre le 640*480 et le 800*600, alors que je souhaite le 1200*1024.
J'ai un peu fouillé, mais je n'ai rien trouvé.
Surtout que je suis plutot habituer aux distributions Mandrake ou RedHat (rha l'habitude de la facilité).
Alors, si yen a qui peuvent me donner un coup de main, sinon, ba je remet une fedora ou mandriva (d'ailleurs faudrai que j'essai la derniere), et j'abandonne définitivement la Débian qui n'est pas fichue de me proposer autre chose que du 800*600

ce genre de réaction ne donne pas vraiment envie de t'aider
personne ne t'oblige à utiliser debian,
 
pour ton problème, les résolutions peuvent se régler dans le fichier /etc/X11/XF86config-4
dans la section screen tu ajoutes à la main les résolutions que tu souhaites,
 
il y a encore un autre moyen plus simple, c'est de lancer
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, et là tu coches toutes les résolutions qui t'intéresse

bien sûr pour s'en rendre compte il faut redémmarrer le serveur graphique,  
 
par exemple avec /etc/init.d/gdm restart

désolé pour le ton de ma question, mais je recherchais depuis une heure comment modifier la resolution, qui ne s'etait pas fait automatiquement. Et comme Débian ne se configure pas de la meme facon que Mandrake et Fédora, j'ai vite été dépassé.
 
En tout cas, merci pour ta reponse rapide et precise.

j ai exactement le meme probleme (meme carte graphique)que R4GTL (probleme de newbies  :( certainement)
le pilote installé par defaut est un generique, et l on ne peut effectivement pas depasser 800x600.modifier la resolution dans le fichier "XF86config-4" n y change rien.
j ai donc installé les pilotes ( https://support.ati.com/ics/support [...] ionID=3380 ) idoines.malheureusement apres l installation ("auto","custom" ou "Generate Distribution Specific Driver Package" ) serverx ne demarre plus.
avec "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" j ai testé differentes combinaisons sans resultat.la seule solution a chaque fois et de renommer "XF86config-4.old" en "XF86config-4" pour pouvoir redemarrer serverx.

J'ai eu le même probleme au demarrage de ma debian ..
 
mais un : dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 et un restart m'a permis de resoudre le probleme.

veux rien savoir chez moi  :cry: (alors que tout semble bien se passer et meme en selectionnant VGA a la place d ATI )
je me demande si ce n est pas un probleme avec mon ecran (LCD)

Debian je trouve que c'est une des meilleur distri mais bon faut etre patient et c'est sure c'est pas pour les noob qui sorte de mandrake ... c'est le jours et la nuit

disons que c'est différent : si tu veux n'avoir rien à faire et que tout soit configuré tout seul, en effet, c'est le jour et la nuit. Si tu es motivé et que tu as envie de comprendre comment ça fonctionne, même un débutant y arrivera, c'est juste une question d'envie. Dans le cas ici, je crois qu'effectivement, ce sont des débutants (ne pas savoir se servir de la console).
 
Sinon, avec les drivers génériques par défaut, on peut parfaitement avoir une résolution de 1280*1024 (et c'est bien 1280 pas 1200), c'est ce que j'ai au boulot et chez moi. Votre Sarge, vous l'avez installée avec quel environnement graphique ? (Gnome, KDE, etc). Vous embêtez pas pour le moment avec les drivers proprio.
 
Pour le cat et le dpkg-reconfigure, c'est juste après que tu te sois loggé, dans la console (après le signe # ou $). Si tu t'es connecté en root (superutilisateur), c'est # et tu as tous les droits sur ton système et c'est nécessaire pour effectuer dpkg-reconfigure et si tu t'es loggé en simple utilisateur, symbole $, tu ne pourras effectuer que le cat. Il nous faut vraiment le contenu du fichier pour pouvoir savoir ce qui ne va pas.

Ah oui c'est sure moi a la base c'etait ca j'ai esseyer mandrake ( trop pas aimé ) RH ( pareil ) et debian j'ai accrocher de suite mais j'y es passé le temps... et now ca fait + de 2ans que j'utilise

pour recentrer le debat, je n ai jamais dis que je voulais que cela se configure tout seul, si j avais choisis la facilité je serais resté sur XANDROS ou SUSE.
si je souhaite me mettre a DEBIAN c est uniquement pour mourir "un peu moins" con.
les quolibets ne me font pas vraiment avancé ..
 
pour en revenir au probleme, a force de bidouille je n ai plus de "XF86Config-4.old" (il faudrait peut etre que je reinstalle le pilote pour en generer un autre)
je peux mettre ici le "XF86Config-4" qui fait planter xserver mais il fait un km de long

normalement quand tu conf tes driver il conf xconfig avec...
surtout que les drivers ati je les encore install hier  
tu fait chmod +x ati...run
./ati...run
et apres tu li... c'est pas bien dur

j ai utilisé la commande "./ati-driver-installer-8.14.13.run et tout semble bien se passer jusqu au reboot suivant (j ai suivie les instruction => http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ [...] -inst.html

j ai simplement un message du genre "impossible demarrer Xserver" et ensuite dans le detail de l erreur j ai ce que j ai exactement ce qu il y a dans le log

vu qu'il y a plusieurs problèmes liés à ton ATI et l'accéleration 3D, mets toi en console total, supprime le fichier /etc/X11/XF86Config-4,
et lance dpkg-reconfigure xfree86-xserver en cochant toutes les résolutions qui t'intéresse et en choisissant un driver standard pour ta CG (pas le proprio d'ATI)

j ai supprimé XF86Config-4, lancé dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, choisis VGA pour le pilote, mais j ai exactement le meme probleme..
que dois je mettre dans "identifiant du bus de la carte video" ?
et dans " modules du serveur XFree86 qui seront chargé par defaut" ?

choisi "radeon" comme le suggère arghbis en driver, je suppose que ce doit être le driver libre standard

y'a un truc que je comprends pas : tu as une radeon 8500. Pourquoi ne choisis-tu pas le pilote radeon lors du dpkg-reconfigure? il est fait pour ça!
 
pour les modules, tu peux laisser les choix par défaut (mais assures-toi que le dri est chargé et GLcore aussi je crois)

j ai testé avec ATI ou VGA sans succés  
maintenant le detail du message d erreur est bien plus court, j ai un :
fatal server error:
no screens found

c est un ecran LCD .
a force de bidouillé il m etait impossible de redemarrer, comme l installation n avait que 24H00 j ai reinstallé DEBIAN.et la miracle sans rien faire de special j ai bien la possibilité de choisir plusieurs resolutions.
j ai installé les pilotes ATI et boum,meme chose ..
je pense que je dois merder dans la config de fglrxconfig.
je me passerais donc des pilotes ATI ..

la réinstallation est rarement la bonne solution, mais dans ton cas, tant mieux si ça marche comme ça ;)
