"I tried it with my 128MB USB stick and got it to work after some trial&error.
I am using a rev 2 deluxe board with the 1006 bios, so I do not know if this works as well for 1.04/06 boards and/or other bios versions.
Here is what I did:
1.) prepared the stick so that is formated like a HD, created a FAT16 primary partition and set this to active (I used linux fdisk but any dos/windows fdisk type of software should be fine) - btw. many USB sticks that I have seen are already set up like that.
2.) I prepared a win98 bootable floppy disk (just search with e.g. google and you will find plenty of places where to download this) that included the sys.com dos-util (again I found it with google within the first 5 links)
3.) Enable the "USB Keyboard & Legacy Support" within the Advanced/Integrated Pheripherals menu of the bios (without this the bios does not see the USB stick)
4.) Boot from the prepared win98 bootdisk while the USB stick is inserted
5.) now drive b: should be your USB stick (check it!)
6.) back on a: type "sys b:" which transfers the DOS system to the USB stick
7.) reboot and enter the bios. Now change within "Advanced BIOS features" for the boot device of your choice (first/secound/third) the option to "USB-ZIP" (that took some time to figure out, but this is the only option that lets the bios boot from my USB stick)
8.) exist&save (with a prayer to the almighty bios save bug - as always ) - voilá, now it should work.
Btw. always try to insert the USB stick directly into the mainboard USB plugs if you have problems, I could not use the USB hub within my monitor to boot from the stick.
Cheers,
Bigben
P.S.: another way how this could work is to format the USB stick as a superfloppy (e.g. using the linux mkdosfs command), this might help those who have problems with the method I described above, but since this worked for me, I did not try the superfloppy method yet."
