Langdon a été contacté par un vieil ami, Marc ERJOU. Ce dernier, détective privé, vient d'être engagé pour retrouver le coupable d'un meurtre.

Langdon regarda de nouveau le cliché, en effet le corps du défunt lui rappela un vieux symbole religieux qu'il avait vue dans un livre pendant ses années universitaires, Mais il ne s'en souvenait pas très bien. "je peux conserver cette photo ?" questionna Langdon. Marc accepta et lui tendis sa carte,"c'est mes coordonnés si tu découvres quelque chose n'hésite pas à m'appeler... Je me rend demain sur les lieux du crime si tu veux, tu peux m'accompagner ". Après réflexion, Langdon accepta à son tour. Langdon, après avoir dit au revoir à son ami, se dirigea vers la bibliothèque municipale pour voir s'il pourrait y trouver le livre . après environ une heure de recherche il finit par le retrouver, il s'intitulait "secte et organisation secrète du 18eme siècle". Après l'avoir emprunté il se dirigea vers son hôtel. Arrivé à sa chambre, il décida de prendre un bain avant de se mettre au travail.
Apres deux heures de lecture, il avait découvert que le symbole était représentatif d'une organisation secrète qui sévissait en Amérique au début du 20eme siècle et qui avait fini par disparaitre ; et toutes leurs actions, passés, étaient signés par le Symbole. Étrangement, Langdon n'avait, nulle part, lut que les membres de l'organisation secrète était, dans le passé, suspecter d'avoir commis de meurtres. S'agisser t-il d'une nouveauté pour cette organisation ? ou est-ce quelqu'un qui voudrait entrainer la police sur de mauvaises pistes ? Langdon décida d'en parler demain à ERJOU.
le lendemain le téléphone sonna vers 6h00 PM, c'était la réception qui annonçait l'arrivée de Marc. Langdon, après s'être habillé, le rejoin. Le voyage se fit en train et les deux amis arrivèrent au Vatican vers 9H30 PM. Alors qu'il se dirigeait, à pied, vers St Peter's Square, une voiture surgissant de la rue pellegrino failli les renversé. Le chauffeur ne s'était pas arrêté pour s'excuser, ce qui choqua Langdon. "Apparament nous ne sommes pas les bienvenues ..." ces mots prononcés, avec sérieux, par ERJOU, n'était pas sensé rassuré Langdon.

Bitter two hours of reading, he had discovered that the symbol was representative of a secret organization which raged in America at the beginning of the 20eme century and which had finished by disparaitre; and all their actions, past, were signed by the Symbol.
Strangely, Langdon had, nowhere, putty which the members of the secret organization was, in past, to suspect to have committed of murders. If agisser t-il of a novelty for this organization? Or is it someone who would like to entrainer the police on bad tracks? Langdon decided to speak about it to ERJOU tomorrow.
The next day the telephone sounded at about 6:00 am PM, it was the reception which announced Marc's arrival.
Langdon, having got dressed, the rejoin. The journey was made by train and both friends arrived to Vatican at about 9:30 am PM. While he went, on foot, to St Peter Square, a car appearing from the pellegrino street failed knocked down. The driver had not stopped to apologize, what shocked Langdon. " Apparament we are not welcome " these pronounced words, with seriousness, by ERJOU, was not sensible reassured Langdon.
