PAGE 6: C&C, Powered By Quake?
"We were thinking of a lot of different concepts, including a fantasy game or even a Lord of the Rings title." -Harvard Bonin
During the first few months of research, the team looked at a number of different 3D technologies. "We explored using the Quake engine, the Unreal engine, and LithTech," says Skaggs, referring to three popular 3D engines. "But we ended up using the W3D rendering technology from C&C Renegade as the basis for our engine, although we built a new 3D architecture on top of it." While the technology to power the engine may have been decided on by March 2001, the team was still unsure of what game it was going to build on top of the engine. "We didn't have a fiction in mind for the game, although we were calling it Generals from the start," says Bonin. "We were thinking of a lot of different concepts, including a fantasy game or even a Lord of the Rings title."
